Donald Trump announces visit to UK in July

US President Donald Trump will visit the UK in July for a “working meeting”, it has been announced.

Mr Trump had previously cancelled a planned trip to London to open the new US embassy amid fears of protests.

He will hold bilateral talks with UK Prime Minister Theresa May on his 13 July trip, with further details to be “set out in due course”, Downing Street said.

The president’s visit has been anticipated for more than a year, after Mrs May was the first foreign leader to be hosted by the president at the White House after his inauguration.

Last year, Mrs May proclaimed the strength of the "most special relationship" between the two countries, and the government extended an invitation for a state visit as a guest of Queen Elizabeth II.

But a full-blown state visit replete with golden carriages and pomp has been deferred amid the threat of huge anti-Trump protests.

The president is not expected to meet with Queen Elizabeth II or other members of the royal family during the working visit.

He is scheduled to be in Europe that week for a NATO summit in Brussels the previous day.
