Donald Trump declares the US 'open for business' in World Economic Forum

In the end, it was Donald Light.

On the big stage at Davos, US President Donald Trump's fire and fury were barely seen.

Initially, the setting seemed as big and bold as Mr Trump's personality.

He walked on stage to a brass band playing, and referenced "America first".

But, his tone was subdued and his speaking voice slower.

And his scripted speech soon got to this: "America first, does not mean America alone, when America grows so does the world."

With that, the Davos elites breathed a small sigh of relief.

Certainly, the man who has railed against globalisation since beginning his run for President must have seemed scary for a business conference aimed squarely at globalisation.

But Donald, as he reminds us constantly, is a billionaire businessman – he has property and developments around the world.

And money isn't just made in the US.

So maybe his new, not-so-against globalisation tone shouldn't be such a surprise.

Mr Trump swept through Davos with a star power rarely seen at the exclusive event.

Long-time attendees say the last time any one person was paid this much attention was Nelson Mandela in the mid-1990s.

Mr Trump clearly loved it. He quipped about the size of the crowds he drew.

He enjoyed dining with the titans of global industry and hearing them endorse his tax cuts.

But what was achieved?

Well, his speech today gave global business a sense that Mr Trump can control his rhetoric when it means money for the US.

And that, they hope, means money for their businesses.

Which really, when it comes down to it, is why they even bother coming to the World Economic Forum in the first place.

Tomorrow morning, the Swiss town will revert to being an idyllic ski resort.

And a year from now, the madness of global money and power will return.
