Donald Trump blames Obama for organised protests and leaks

US President Donald Trump has told FOX News in America he believes his predecessor Barack Obama is behind a number of protests and leaks that have plagued his new administration.

“I think that President Obama’s behind it because his people are certainly behind it,” Mr Trump said during the interview with Fox and Friends.

“And some of the leaks possibly come from that group, you know, some of the leaks – which are very serious leaks, because they’re very bad in terms of national security.”

Since Mr Trump was elected, dozens of organised demonstrations have taken place across the United States.

Mr Trump said he understands where the motive, if true, may come from.

“But I also understand that’s politics, and in terms of him being behind things, that’s politics. And it will probably continue,” the president said.

“I’m not really surprised because I understand the way the world works. It’s politics. I mean I’m changing things that he’s wanted to do.”

Mr Trump did not offer up any evidence to support the claims.

Later today Mr Trump will make his first address to Congress, which experts say is always part policy speech, part political theatre. 

After a chaotic start to his presidency, Mr Trump will be trying to project his administration as ready to stride forward on top priorities such as changes to Mr Obama's health care law and a tax overhaul.

Congressional Democrats, in turn, will be trying to calibrate how strongly to oppose the Republican president in the staid setting of the House chamber, where manners still matter.
