The federal government's Smartraveller website keeps a wary eye on such developments, so it can advise Australians what destinations are safer, and which to avoid.

Burkina Faso, Africa
Burkina Faso in Africa has a high level of crime, kidnapping, and terrorism, the government said. Additionally, Australians could run afoul of local laws, including a prohibition on photos of military buildings.
Haiti, Americas
Gang violence continues rampant across Haiti, with many airlines cancelling flights out of Port au Prince.
Yemen, Middle East
Ongoing armed conflict involving Houthi rebels promotes a high risk of being caught in armed violence, kidnapping, or terrorism.
Syria, Middle East
Syria remains volatile after the long-running civil war came to an apparent end with the victory of rebel groups over President Bashar al Assad's regime. Groups such ISIS are still active in the country.
Iraq, Middle East
Terrorist attacks and kidnappings put people travelling to Iraq at high risk.
Belarus, Europe
