Dead pregnant shark sliced open to save babies

A family of beachgoers in Georgia got a remarkable life lesson when they discovered a dead beached shark was pregnant with young that were still alive inside it.

In the remarkable footage, which was filmed in May but has just gone viral, a woman who says she is a dermatologist notices the dead shark's stomach is moving.

A man pulls out a pocket knife and points it towards the fish that has likely washed up dead from the mortal wound below its mouth.

The man slices the blade down along the carcass so its guts spill out onto the sand.

"That looks like organs. That doesn't look like any pregnancy stuff," the man says after slicing along the shark's body.

He gingerly searches through the gizzards but is unable to find anything at first.

After several minutes of fumbling through organs, the man finds a shark pup still wrapped up in a placenta.

In the emergency caesarean section, the man frees the young fish — born with all its teeth — and tosses it into the shallows, allowing it a chance at life.

Two more pups are found — one showing only a small lick of life, the other thrashing about.

The two sharks are also tossed into the ocean to catch up with its orphaned sibling.

There is a good chance the pups survived as they naturally swim away from their mothers after birth so she does not eat them.
