Video has captured the moment a UK cyclist was lucky to escape with his life after pushing his bike through a level crossing moments before a train zoomed past.

The man can be seen waiting for a train to pass in one direction, before he starts pushing his bike across the tracks, failing to notice a train rushing past in the other direction.

The heart-stopping moment in Pudsey, Leeds, occurred earlier this year and was released by transport authorities yesterday as a warning to commuters.

British Transport Police labelled the near-miss as “horrifying” in a statement, adding 18 similar incidents have been reported in the last year and a half.

“The footage shows just how close this cyclist came to being struck, and most likely killed by the train,” community safety manager at Network Rail Vicki Beadle said.

“People need to realise how a split second decision to ignore safety procedures can have life changing consequences, not only for themselves, but also for their family and friends.”
