Global stocks have added sharply to their gains on Wall Street after President Donald Trump and his team announced more measures to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the government intends to send cheques to Americans in the next two weeks in an effort to curb the economic costs of the virus.

He also said the government intends to keep financial markets open.

The Dow went from a gain of 400 to a gain of more than 1100. The Federal Reserve took addition steps to support short-term borrowing by companies.

Some economists say a recession is already underway as broad swaths of the economy come closer to a standstill.

The slight rebound comes just hours after stocks in the US opened higher at the start of trading today, a day after plunging to their worst loss in more than three decades.

The Trump administration has also proposed a roughly $850 billion stimulus plan to help the economy, including relief for small businesses and the airline industry, as well as a tax cut for wage-earners.

The travel industry has been among the industries hardest hit by the outbreak, as planes sit grounded and hotels and casinos shut their doors.
