Convicted murderer Jodi Arias 'corrupting' girls from behind bars

A convicted female murderer dubbed "America's most hated woman" has been caught allegedly "corrupting" obsessed teenage girls from her jail cell.

Jodi Arias, 34, was last week spared the death penalty for murdering ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander in 2008 after a jury was deadlocked, ABC News reports.

Two 15-year-old Ohio schoolgirls and one man from Greece posted screenshots of their video conference calls with Arias online and are among 10 admirers now banned by prison authorities from contacting her.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has styled himself as "America's toughest sheriff", said Arias had been making dozens of calls a day instructing the underage girls on how to obtain false identification so they could keep talking to her.

“Right now, I’m banning the visitors," Mr Arpaio said. "She's tried to play the system."

"In her thirst for adoration and attention, Arias is willing to corrupt these young girls, all to satisfy her own narcissism. That needs to stop."

Mr Arpaio said all of her fans had been "assisting Arias in her prolific use of social media" by tweeting for her, which she is banned from doing.

Arias made headlines after she was captured on film laughing and doing a headstand in a police video shortly before being charged with the murder of ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander in 2008.

Mr Alexander, 30, died after being stabbed nearly 30 times and shot in the head as he showered in his Arizona home.

His throat was slit so deep he was almost decapitated.

Arias admitted to killing Mr Alexander but said it was in self-defence.

Her trial and conviction for first degree murder in 2013 was broadcast live and became must-watch television in the US as Arias discussed the details of her sexual relationship with Mr Alexander, who was a devout Mormon.

A judge will decide whether Arias is sentenced to life without parole or life with 25 years at a hearing on April 13.
