College kicker gets smashed by blocker

If NRL export Jarryd Hayne was in any doubt about the physical challenge facing him in American football, then he need look no further than the recent Cotton Bowl game between US colleges Baylor and Michigan State.

The contest saw Baylor kicker Chris Callahan on the receiving end of one of the biggest hits ever as he was sent flying into the air following a block by Michigan State’s Tony Lippett.

With his team leading 41-35 late in the fourth quarter, Callahan saw his 43-yard field goal attempt blocked before giving chase in an attempt to make a tackle on the return.

But he was soon flattened by Lippett’s huge block and eventually slumped to the turf, apparently knocked out by the impact.

Callahan took to Twitter after the game to announce that he was still “alive”, while Lippett also tweeted his opponent to check he was ok.

While Callahan emerged unscathed from the incident, his efforts appeared to be in vain, as Michigan State fought back to win 42-41 in the final minute.
