CNN warzone reporter 'bit two paramedics in drunken Baghdad embassy melee'

A foreign correspondent for CNN has apologised for allegedly biting two paramedics during a drunken spat at the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Senior US journalist Arwa Damon and the network are both being sued for $US2 million ($2.14m) by medics Tracy Lamar and Charles Simons, who claim they were bitten on their forearms by Damon as she threatened them by declaring she was a "major reporter for CNN" during the July 19 incident.

In an email following the melee obtained by the New York Post, Damon apologised to embassy staff for her "disastrous behaviour", which she did not fully remember.

"It's been an extremely stressful time, I was exhausted, I had not had proper food all day and clearly miscalculated how my body would handle the alcohol consumed," she reportedly said.

"Needless to say, I am utterly mortified and take full responsibility for my actions, which are inexcusable."

The State Department is reportedly investigating the incident, while CNN told the Politico it was still "not aware" of the lawsuit by the two medics.

Damon, 36, has worked for CNN since 2006, covering the Middle East, and was this year awarded the Courage in Journalism Award by the International Women's Media Foundation.

She is the granddaughter of a former Syrian prime minister who was assassinated in a 1949 military coup, the New York Daily News reports.
