Amateur video has captured the confusion, panic and sheer terror in the dark heart of an Israeli assault on eastern Gaza.

Dozens of civilians caught under heavy bombardment - they ran with what they had.

It was filmed on Sunday when 72 residents from the same district were killed, including women and children. It is part of what the UN believes could amount to war crimes.

"Respect for the right to life of civilians, including children, should be a foremost consideration. Not abiding by these principles may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity," said Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

This morning in northern Gaza, the quiet dawn was interrupted by the sound of war.

We filmed from our balcony as Israeli navy ships pounded a beachfront compound. A shed caught fire and then erupted.

Israel has lost three more soldiers, but claims it's now preparing for the next stage of fighting.
