New security video shows the moment the alleged Christchurch gunman fired at pedestrians through his car window, revealing new details about the terror attack that left at least 50 people dead.

In the video, obtained by CNN from a hotel car park on Deans Avenue, gunshots are heard in the distance at 1.42pm local time last Friday.

Pedestrians can be seen walking along the street, including two men in traditional dress heading in the direction of the Al Noor mosque, about 300m away from the hotel.

At 1.45pm on the camera's time stamp, more gunshots ring out and two other men sprint away from the mosque as police sirens ring out.

A minute later, a Subaru Outback screeches to a halt and sounds its horn twice – apparently to the attract attention of the men in traditional dress.

Suddenly, the passenger side front window of the Subaru shatters, as the driver fires from a distance of just two or three metres at one of the men.

He falls to the ground and crawls to safety. His fate is not yet known.

The gunman then speeds off in the direction of the Linwood Mosque, about 13 minutes' drive away, to continue the massacre.

Mourners lay flowers near the Linwood mosque. Police say the gunman was on his way to a third attack site when he was arrested.

Police arrested Australian man Brenton Tarrant, 28, about 21 minutes after the first emergency call was made and about 15 minutes after the shooting in the hotel video.

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said Tarrant was on his way to a third location to continue his alleged rampage when he was detained.

"We strongly believe we stopped him on the way to a further attack," he said.

"So lives were saved by our staff, courageous in their intervention."

Comm. Bush declined to say whether the third location was a mosque, citing the ongoing court proceedings.

"We absolutely believe we know where he was going," he said.

Police responded within minutes of the first shots being fired.

The shooting at pedestrians also appeared in the gunman's live stream video, which was widely circulated in the wake of the attack as social media giants struggled to contain its spread.

Police declined to comment on the video other than to say: "The investigation into the circumstances of the attack are ongoing and we are not in a position to comment on anything that may be evidential."
