A visitor to a Chinese zoo was so intent on watching kangaroos hop that he threw rocks at the helpless animals.

The middle-aged man was filmed throwing palm-sized rocks at the kangaroos in Zhuyuwan Zoo, Jiangsu province, last month, reports The Straits Times.

Footage shows him walking to the wooden fence of the kangaroo enclosure and then forcefully throwing the rocks at the sleeping roos in a bid to see them hop.

A witness told Chinese media the rocks hit the sleeping animals, prompting the man to gleefully pull out his phone and photograph them.

The witness explained how other zoo visitors asked him to stop but he told them he was on a "rare trip" to the zoo and was determined to see the roos hop.

Staff at the zoo confirmed the incident.

The images drew swift condemnation after it was posted on social media on March 28.

"That selfish idiot should be put in jail and have people throw rocks at him," wrote one commenter.
