China's frozen city takes shape

Finishing touches are being made to hundreds of colossal and elaborate ice sculptures to mark an annual international ice-festival in Harbin, north-east China.

Some 7,000 workers began a blizzard of building in early November last year to create the stunning replicas of iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Rome's Colosseum.

Artists and workers have insisted that this year's offerings are "bigger and better" than ever before to mark to mark the festivals 30th anniversary.

The ethereal snow-town which prides itself on being "like nowhere else on earth", is even equip to light up the chilly night sky with LED lightening installed in all ice-buildings.

Organisers claimed they it took more than 180,000 square metres of ice and 150,000 square metres of snow to craft the creations.
