Ceasefire ends in failed attempt to end bloodshed

Medics have retrieved at least 147 bodies from the remains of hundreds of Gaza homes during a 12-hour ceasefire agreed to by both Israel and Hamas.
Residents sifted through the debris to collect whatever belongings they could.
They knew the reprieve wouldn't last long and they were right.

Sirens rang out over Ashkelon south of Tel Aviv just an hour after the truce expired as a warning of incoming rocket fire.
Hamas had rejected Israel's offer to extend the ceasefire for another four hours in a major blow for international efforts to end the bloodshed.
