Car ferry crashes into harbour wall on Spain’s Canary Islands
A car ferry has crashed head-on into a harbour wall in Las Palmas, the capital of one of Spain’s Canary Islands.
The crash, which was captured on camera and posted to Facebook, occurred on Friday evening local time and has been described as a “freak accident”, EnglishRadioNews reports.
According to the El Mundo website, the Naviera Armas ferry suffered a technical failure which led to a power cut on board the vessel.
The Naviera Armas car ferry was taken to the harbour for inspection following the crash on the island of Gran Canaria, off north-western Africa.
No one was seriously injured in the crash although 13 people were treated for minor injuries.
But the ferry hit underwater fuel pipes as it crashed, causing an oil leak which emergency teams are rushing to contain.
