Several upstate New Yorkers awoke to quite a surprise on Monday morning, discovering their cars had been completely frozen over after strong winds hit a nearby lake.

As temperatures reached freezing point in Buffalo on Sunday night, winds reaching up to 75km/h caused Lake Erie to spill over and freeze cars that were parked nearby.

ABC News reporter Matt Bove shared an incredible image of one car which was completely frozen solid.

"I don’t even know if pictures do it justice of just how insane this image is," Bove said.

"It seems like there are several inches of thick ice around the car."

Despite the freezing temperatures, roads in Buffalo have remained open.
