The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), created by a neurologist, consists of 30 questions designed to detect signs of mild cognitive impairment, which often leads to dementia.

The US president opted to undergo testing after journalist Michael Wolff's controversial book Fire and Fury alleged Trump was often unable to recognise old friends and had started to repeat himself word for word.

The ensuing storm of speculation about Trump's mental and physical fitness to be president prompted him to tweet that he was "a very stable genius", and to request the White House doctor to administer a cognitive test.

Dr Ronny Jackson, who told a White House press conference he didn't believe the president needed a cognitive test, said Trump's perfect score indicated that "The president is mentally very sharp, very intact." He added, "He is fit for duty."

However, the test's creator, neuroscientist Dr Ziad Nasreddine, cautioned that it doesn't necessarily mean Trump is in perfect mental health.

Nasreddine told The Huffington Post, "The test is a screening measure. It has limitations."

It's designed, he explained, to test for "minimum cognitive function to be able to do important things" and "does not absolutely assess personality issues".
