Buffalo herd saves mate from lion attack

A South African tourist has filmed the incredible moment a herd of buffalo saved one of their kind from being devoured by a pack of lions.

The video, filmed in the Kruger National Park last month, shows four lions clawing at and biting the lone buffalo.

The lions take the buffalo down and are seemingly preparing for their feast when a buffalo herd appears behind them.

One of the buffaloes swiftly backs up and rams the lion which is pinning its victim down.

Freed from its fate, the buffalo runs away as the herd stands guard.

The footage was filmed Ronell Van Der Merwe and posted online yesterday by Latest Sightings, a company which shares video of happenings in Kruger, one of the largest safari parks in South Africa.
