Mitchell Johnson has taken his 300th Test wicket as part of an explosive spell to start the second day of the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston.

Two gentle swinging deliveries to start Johnson’s spell yielded five runs for Joe Root and gave little indication of the carnage that the Australian left-armer would cause.

With his next delivery, Johnson became just the fifth Australian to take 300 Test wickets with a brutal ball that reared at Johnny Bairstow, who could only glove the ball to Peter Nevill.

Two balls later, Johnson removed Ben Stokes in similar fashion with the English all-rounder unable to evade a sharp rising delivery. The double breakthrough reduced the hosts to 142/5.

Johnson joins Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Dennis Lillee and Brett Lee as Australians with 300 Test wickets.
