Brutal crash wraps car around pole

A young driver has survived against the odds in a horrific crash that saw his speeding car wrapped effortlessly around a lamp post.

The 22-year-old is fighting for his life in the emergency unit at the University Hospital in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, after the brutal smash caught on a security camera on May 20.

The video of the crash, released this week, shows the speeding car skidding on its side for several metres before colliding with the pole.

In an instant the frame of the white sedan contorts to bend around the pole, pieces of debris flying through the air as the light is short-circuited and the car is left to bounce back onto the road.

Details of what led to the crash have not been revealed, with police saying they are still investigating whether the driver was intoxicated at the time, according to Brazilian news website G1.

FIrefighters secured the scene and needed to cut the man free from the mangled vehicle before he could be rushed to hospital.

He remains in a coma as he recovers.
