Brussels attacks: Tintin weeps as cartoonists take on terrorists

Cartoonists around the world have used comic-book hero Tintin and other well-known Belgian icons to mark the series of bomb attacks that have killed around 30 people in Brussels.

In many of the cartoons, Tintin is seen with a single tear on his cheek in the company of his dog Snowy ('Milou' in the original French language version).

Tintin was created by Belgian cartoonist Herge in 1929. The Herge Foundation has been vigilant in protecting copyright in Tintin imagery, although is expected to turn a blind eye to the widespread use of the youthful adventurer in the case of the bombings.

A number of cartoons have also included one of Brussels' most iconic statues.

'The pissing boy', or 'Mannekin Pis' in Dutch, is a famous bronze fountain in Brussels. The 17th century statue, depicting a boy urinating into a bowl, is only around 60cm high but draws tens of thousands of visitors every year.

At least 34 people have been killed in the attacks at Brussels' airport and at a train station.

Islamic State have claimed responsibility for the attacks, believed to be the work of suicide bombers.

The nation is now marking three days of national mourning.
