A Brazilian bodybuilder is risking infection, amputation and even death by injecting a cocktail of mineral oil and alcohol into his arms in order to make them bigger.

Four times a week Arlindo "The Mountain" de Souza, 43, injects himself with the potentially fatal synthetic mixture which he credits with giving him his 74cm biceps.

The bodybuilder took the substance for two months in 2012 in the hope it would make him "the king" of his local gym.

"A guy gave it to me. He said 'take this, this will make you grow in days'," Mr de Souza told Barcroft Media.

"You load the syringe, put it in your arm, apply it and it swells you up right there and then."

But Mr de Souza admits he struggled knowing when to stop.

"Each time I took it I wanted more," he said. "For me there wasn't a limit."

Mr de Souza has even become something of a local celebrity, with his family saying, "Women around here and in other places admire him. They think he looks nice."

Despite his enormous size, the bodybuilder has not become any stronger and can only lift normal size weights.

Mr de Souza said he is not bothered by warnings from doctors that his muscle mass cocktail could end up killing him.

"If I get ill, I don't know, if my arm bursts, then I will go to the doctor and get an operation," Mr de Souza said. "It's normal."

But he admits a close friend of his had already died from the extreme measure.

“He went beyond the limit,” he said.
