A precocious teenager who launched a successful online petition to take a yearbook photo with his principal in which they both cradled pets and appeared to dodge lasers has died.

Draven Rodriguez, whose unusual yearbook photo caused an internet sensation last year, was found dead in an apparent suicide at his home in New York State last Thursday, according to reports.

Mr Rodriguez' parents told local news outlet the Times Union that he had died at his own hand.

Those who knew him spoke of a bright, sensitive boy who thought differently to others.

"I was lucky enough to be in the young scholars program with Draven for many years," wrote friend Erin Thiessen on Facebook.

"Draven was extremely intelligent, and the way that he processed things always intrigued me. He thought logically, but he was never afraid to think outside the box."

He is survived by his parents, his 11-year-old sister and his stepfather.
