An 11-year-old boy has wreaked havoc in the US after stealing a cement truck and going for an hour-long joyride.

Police believe the boy snuck into a construction site on the outskirts of Dodge Center, Minnesota, on Sunday afternoon before finding the truck with the keys still inside.

Officers and a helicopter were soon in hot pursuit, with spikes strewn across the road, which the boy ran over.

He kept going and drove through the neighbouring towns of Kasson and Byron, riding on three tires and a rim as he hit speeds over 100 km/h.

He then drove back into Dodge Center.

"I betcha he drove around town 6 or 7 times. He was smiling, hooting and hollering...he was having a good time," witness Troy Flatness told KTTC.

After sideswiping several cars and ramming a police cruiser, the boy was cornered in a no through road and arrested after trying to run away.

The joyride lasted 72 minutes, police said. No one was injured.

The unnamed boy is now being kept in a juvenile detention centre awaiting charges.
