US state's bounty on Bigfoot over $3 million

The US state of Oklahoma has established a multi-million-dollar bounty for anybody who can capture its most famous resident - Bigfoot.

Republican state representative Justin Humphrey announced on the House floor, during its most recent legislative session, that the reward was now set at $3.88 million (US$3 million).

It had earlier this year been increased to $2.7 million, again in a bill introduced by Mr Humphrey.

However, gunslingers need not apply.

"It's not hunt by the way, we don't hunt Bigfoot, nobody wants to harm Bigfoot, we want to do a live, humane capture of Bigfoot," Mr Humphrey said during the announcement.

"We are wanting the whole world to come to south-eastern Oklahoma and to the state of Oklahoma and get involved in our bounty."

Mr Humphrey has already put forward a bill that would see the creation of an official "Bigfoot hunting season", with set dates and hunting fees.

Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, is perhaps the world's most famous cryptid.

Said to be a furred, ape-like creature, it is supposed to dwell in the forests of North America.

Enthusiasts and researchers have built up a corpus of anecdotal and alleged "evidence" to support its existence that dwarfs even that of the legendary Blue Mountains Panther.

However, the existence of such a species or individual creature is widely believed to be a combination of myth and hoax.
