A Finnish man accused of sexual assault in Australia was extradited from the Indonesian resort island of Bali on Wednesday, according to officials.

Samuel Pekka Juhani Kuuppo, 32, was arrested in May last year on Bali over the attack on a woman in Western Australia in February 2015.

Kuuppo, who could face a long jail term if found guilty of the assault, was flown from Bali to Perth.

"He was charged with a criminal offence in Australia and on that basis, Australia asked us to extradite him," said Abdul Muin, the head of the attorney-general's office in Bali.

Bali is one of the world's top tourist destinations and a pocket of Hinduism in Muslim-majority Indonesia, attracting millions of visitors every year with its tropical beaches and lively night life.
