Australian couple leaves Thailand with surrogate babies despite government crackdown

An Australian couple has been able to leave Thailand with their surrogate-born babies despite a government crackdown threatening to prevent them bringing their children home.

The same-sex couple were stopped at Bangkok International Airport on Thursday along with another Australian couple trying to bring their surrogate-born children back to Australia.

ABC NewsRadio has confirmed that the same-sex couple have now left Thailand, arriving in Singapore with twin babies born to a surrogate last month.

Thailand’s military-dominated national assembly were handed draft laws earlier this week banning commercial surrogacy in the wake of the baby Gammy controversy.

A number of fertility clinics were raided and shutdown after baby Gammy’s story made international headlines earlier this month.

Baby Gammy was allegedly left with his surrogate mother by a West Australian couple after he was born with Down’s syndrome last December.

The federal government has warned Australians to seek expert advice before pursuing surrogacy in Thailand, which is a mecca to many who are prohibited from engaging a surrogate under Australian law.
