Social media influencer Andrew Tate, who has posted online saying women must accept "some responsibility" if they are sexually assaulted, has been banned by Meta.

The BBC has reported the former kickboxer and Big Brother UK contestant has had his accounts kicked off both Facebook and Instagram.

Meta told the BBC Tate had been removed for violating their policies but did not offer further details.

Tate had previously been banned from Twitter in 2017.

While touting himself as something of a lifestyle guru for young men, Tate's social media accounts have drawn attention and condemnation for repeated misogynist statements, including saying he would threaten a woman with a machete if she ever accused him of cheating on her.

In other posts he has said women are "property".

Tate has been active on social media for some years, but his popularity has skyrocketed recently.

He had 4.7 million Instagram followers before his account was removed - up from about one million in June.

While Tate has been likewise banned from TikTok, his fans continue to share his material there, and concerns have been raised about his influence on teenage boys and young men.

However, UK tabloid The Mirror published a purported statement from Tate in which he said old videos showing him playing a "comedic character" had been taken out of context.

"Internet sensationalism has purported the idea that I am anti-women when nothing could be further from the truth," he said.
