Ancient humans may have lived amongst real 'unicorns' according scientists who have discovered new fossils in Kazakhstan.

The extinct creature known as the 'Siberian unicorn' was thought to have died out 350,000 years ago, however a new study by the American Journal of Applied Science infers that date may be closer to 29,000 years, placing it in the same timeline as humans.

Scientists have revised the creature's extinction date due to the discovery of a skull in Kazakhstan's Pavlodar region, the Guardian reports.

Despite references to the mythological creature, Elasmotherium Sibiricum is more alike to a rhinoceros than horse.

Standing at nearly 2m tall and weighing just over 4000kg, the Siberian animal would have been a formidable adversary if provoked.
