Ancient 55-inch sarcophagus discovered in Roman Forum dates to 6th century B.C. according to experts

Archaeologists have discovered a shrine dedicated to the legendary founder of Rome, Romulus, during an excavation of the Roman Forum.

Experts believe the shrine holds an underground chamber with an altar and 55-inch sarcophagus which dates to the 6^th century B.C.

Legends say that Romulus founded the city in 735 B.C.

"This is an extraordinary discovery," Director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park Alfonsina Russo, told The Times of London.

"The forum never ceases to yield amazing fresh treasures."

The Forum was the center of public life in ancient Rome, located near the main complex of buildings, which include the speaker's podium where announcements were made, according to the Associated Press.

"Rome always marvels with its treasures. Inside the Roman Forum new exciting archaeological discovery: a hypogeum with a tuff sarcophagus from the 6th century B.C.," Mayor Virginia Raggi said in a tweet.

Researchers also recently discovered that many Mount Vesuvius victims "baked" as they died, and ancient brain matter turned to glass as a result of the volcanic eruption.

The shrine will be unveiled by the Colosseum Archaeological Park on Friday 21 February.
