Wing torn off Air Canada passenger plane during rough landing at Halifax

An Air Canada passenger plane has been damaged after leaving the runway and smashing a wing into a powerpole at Halifax airport in bad weather today.

Flight AC624 from Toronto made a “poor” landing early this morning (local time) and clipped a power pylon as it came to a stop, local media has reported.

The force of the impact tore a wing off the Airbus A320, while the nose also sustained major damage.

"An aircraft made a poor landing," a spokesperson for Halifax Stanfield airport said.

Air Canada initially tweeted that no one had been injured during the rough landing, but in a later update said 22 people had been taken to hospital for observation and minor injuries.

The airline said 132 people were on board the flight, plus five crew.

The incident also triggered a blackout in the airport’s terminal, passengers announced via Twitter.

Local media has reported that heavy snow had made visibility very poor.
