Abandoned baby found in stolen bag

An Indian street vendor who stole a bag from a train was shocked to discover it contained an abandoned two-week-old baby.

Twenty-year-old Kishor Kale was selling nail polish on a train to Belapur in Mumbai when he noticed an abandoned bag sitting on the side of a carriage.

Hoping it was filled with money and other valuables, Kale picked it up and began to escape before he looked inside, the Daily Mail reports.

When he unzipped the green bag on the station platform, a baby's hand reached out to him.

Panicked, Kale tried to abandon the baby again but a ticket collector who had been watching caught him before he could escape.

Police are now investigating after first arresting Kale thinking he was abandoning his own child.

"We're investigating the case and we're using Mr Kale to help us recreate the scene and find the baby's real family," said police officer Hanuman Kharat.

"We are also speaking to maternity hospitals in the area to find out who has given birth to boys this week."

The baby is said to be healthy and in the care of a children's home.
