Which LEGO pieces and sets are the most valuable?

Turns out there are some LEGO® pieces that are worth a pretty penny… so dig out the original collection and start hunting for your small fortune.
In fact, one magazine article even claimed that investing in LEGO was ultimately a better investment than gold. But while you might be thinking now is the perfect time to head back to mum and dads to pull your LEGO out, it does need to be in good condition.

If it's in mint condition it is worth more, and if you have every part, obviously it's deemed even more worthy. Still in the box? You've hit the jackpot.
Sets typically bring in the most dosh, followed by mini figures, then parts. Perhaps there is an argument for storing your sets altogether after all.
A good start to find out if your LEGO is worth anything is to check out sold listings on eBay for the same items or check with an auction house. There are also LEGO price guides online like this one from BrickToyPriceGuide. Often, a LEGO set or minifig is considered extremely valuable but is then re-released, making it more accessible again.
We could go into specific detail about the kits and pieces worth the most but let’s also take a look at some pieces you might actually have a chance of locating under the couch.
Hint: It's unlikely to be the Collector's Millennium Falcon, said to be worth several thousand dollars (it sells brand new from the LEGO store for $1,299.99).
Gerben van IJken, a full-time LEGO investor and appraiser with the E.U.-based auction platform Catawiki, told Fatherly the highest ever sale price for a Millennium Falcon is an astounding $15,000.
"This sale involved a first edition set, sold in an airtight case," Gerben said of the incredible sale.
These sets generally sell for $3,400 to $5,700 according to the auctioneer.
Mr Gold is worth money if you happen to find him gleaming among the dust mites.
The Back to the Future Delorean is said to be worth a decent buck, scoring you around $100.
The Taj Mahal set is widely sought after and will score you enough to buy a whole heap more LEGO.
The easiest LEGO to sell and get decent money for are the various Star Wars-themed sets, with the Death Star also pulling in a pretty penny.
Harry Potter sets are also usually extremely popular.
Of course, value is in the eye of the beholder and ultimately, if someone wants something you’ve got, you might just make yourself some money.
