Sam's holiday began on the south coast of Upolu, Samoa's main island, about a 30 minute drive from the airport. Return to Paradise resort is on a beautiful stretch of coastline where Hollywood chose to film the classic 1953 Gary Cooper movie of the same name.
From the moment Sam arrived it was clear that the beachfront location takes the centre stage. There is a range of accommodation types available, from comfortable garden view rooms to spacious beach front villas, all simply furnished, with the focus on the breathtaking surroundings. A few steps across the sand and guests can be swimming and snorkelling in the warm turquoise water, or relaxing on the beach drinking a fresh coconut.
The true magic of Return to Paradise lies in its deep commitment to Samoan tradition. This family-owned property ensures that what you spend flows back into the neighbouring village, supporting the local community. Guided village tours explain local customs, such as opening your house to strangers in need and that lands are owned by families, not individuals, managed by a matai, or family chief. Life in Samoa very much revolves around family and church. The absolute highlight for Sam was a visit to the local school, where she was welcomed with singing, dancing, and pure joy, quickly becoming part of the show herself!
Back at the resort, Sam enjoyed a cocktail from the Rock Pool Bar while watching a stunning sunset. That evening the resort hosted a spectacular traditional Fiafia show with buffet dinner. The vibrant music and dance show ended with a dazzling fire-knife performance.
Sam's greatest takeaway from this paradise was the permission to simply slow down, where doing very little is perfectly acceptable. Guests return not just for the million-dollar views, but for the authentic culture and the genuine connection with the people.
