As well as its thriving food and café culture St Kilda is famous for being a creative and cultural hub, with regular live music and events and is currently home to one of the world's most fascinating art installations, the Rain Room.

Presented by Jackalope Hotels, it truly is a bizarre concept, but one that Catriona loved. Set up in a purpose built pavilion you walk into a darkened room with rain falling from the ceiling. There are motion sensors that detect your movement so as you navigate your way through the space the rain continues to fall, but never on you.

This sensory experience connects art, technology and nature but as Catriona said, you wouldn't want to have a weak bladder!

The Rain Room may be temporary but there are some permanent fixtures worth a visit. The Esplande, or Espy as it's better known, has been an institution since the late 1800's. A recent revamp has brought new life to the venue which houses 3 live music stages, several bars and 2 restaurants over its 5 levels.

The Prince Hotel has also had a makeover and been restored to its original art deco style. Once a backpackers, the rooms are now comfortable and stylish and perfectly at home in the beachside suburb of St Kilda.
