This 'magic' Colombian river transforms every year

Bradley Johnston

If you came across Colombia's Caño Cristales river at any other time of the year, you probably wouldn't give it a second look. Because at any other time of the year it'd be indistinguishable from other any other river — just a bed of rocks covered in ordinary green moss.

But for a brief stint every year — between the wet and dry seasons — the river transforms into something almost other-worldly, blossoming in a vibrant kaleidoscope of colour.

During these wet and dry seasons the water temperature becomes "just right" for the unique species of plant (Macarenia clavigera) that lines the river's floor. It erupts in a deep red colour, which when contrasted with splotches of yellow and green sand (plus the crystal blue water) a stunning multi-coloured illusion is created. Watch the full clip above to see it in action.

You'll find Caño Cristales in a super remote area not easily accessible by road. But adventurous visitors can make their way there by flying into the nearby town of La Macarena. It's just a short trip to Serrania de la Macarena from there – the national park where the river is located.

Plus, if you want to admire the colours from a little closer, swimming is permitted in some areas. Park rangers just ask you don't wear sunscreen, to protect the water conditions and avoid damaging the plant species, so remember to pack your rashy.

And it's not just us who are completely obsessed with this find, with the river currently trending on Twitter.

Colombia's Caño's stunning colour show is on display between September and November every year.
