Qantas passenger with lethal nut allergy forced to wear mask and sit in bathroom

A passenger on a Melbourne-bound Qantas flight was made to sit in the bathroom and wear a face mask while nuts were served by airline staff, putting her at risk of anaphylactic shock.

Laura Merry was visiting from East Sussex, England to see her sister in Australia when the incident took place.

"Qantas Australia were made aware of my nut allergy months before my booking and I had written documents to confirm that they would not serve nuts onboard," Merry told The Sun. " "However, when I boarded on March 3, the cabin manager's attitude toward my allergy was awful."

Merry claims that airline staff said they had no notes on her allergy, and they refused to make an announcement to passengers and told her that complimentary almond slices would be served during the flight.

While the Qantas website says that all peanuts have been removed from flights, the airline "cannot guarantee an allergy-free environment."

Qantas staff warned Merry not to board the Melbourne-bound flight, but when told that wasn't an option, crew handed her a mask to wear instead.

"During the rest of my Qantas flight they gave me this mask to wear as the solution instead of just simply not serving the nut snacks or simply just supplying a snack with no nuts in," said Merry. "This wouldn't prevent an allergic reaction."

Laura Merry spent the remainder of her flight sitting in the toilet to escape the nutty snacks being handed out by cabin crew.

"Seeing so many young people die from nut allergies last year is terrifying and should be a sign that some procedures need to change," said Merry.

The passenger's entire ordeal was documented on Twitter, but has since been deleted.
