Qantas offers sneak peek into new domestic cabins with wider seats and free WiFi

Qantas has given customers a sneak peek at the cabins on their new fleet of airplanes, which are a step up in passenger comfort.

The airline has ordered 29 new Airbus A220-300 aircraft, which will be used as QantasLink planes.

With wider seats, fast free WiFi in all cabins, and less emissions, the 137-seat aircraft promises a better flying experience for travellers.

The upgraded aircraft will initially fly between Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane from March, then Melbourne and Hobart from July.

The Airbus A220s burn less fuel and generate fewer emissions than previous-generation aircraft.

Each plane will have 10 business seats in a 2-2 configuration and 127 economy seats in a 2-3 layout. Business seats will have a 37 inch (94 centimetre) seat pitch with a 5 inch (27 centimetre) recline.

All business seats also have a wireless charging pad, bottle holder, extendable cocktail table, and a headrest, calf rest and footrest.

In economy, seats are wider and more padded that QantasLink's previous offerings. They have a 30-inch, or 76-centimetre seat pitch and 18-inch (45 centimetre) seat width, with extra cushioning and an adjustable headrest.

All seats will have dual USB A & C charging ports, tablet holders, and six-way adjustable headrests.

While there are no seatback screens, free WiFi will be available to all passengers, with access to Qantas' updated entertainment app.

The cabins have been thoughtfully designed to provide passengers with more light and space, with higher ceilings and larger windows.

Overhead storage has also been increased by 20 per cent compared to previous aircraft.

As these aircraft can fly further - almost double the range of the 717, using less fuel, Qantas says that using the jets for long domestic routes and short-haul international flights is a possibility for the future.

QantasLink flies to more than 50 domestic cities and towns within Australia. The new aircraft are expected to hit the skies from March 1.
