Why it's definitely worth travelling to the Maldives during the 'off season'

The words 'monsoon season' can definitely be a little off-putting.

Most tropical destinations like the Maldives are known to have a wet and dry season and it's no surprise these generally line up with the peak and off-peak times for travel.

So while most of us would usually aim for optimal temperatures and clear blue skies for a beach holiday, there are a host of reasons why travelling in the off-season might be the better option. Here we give you three.

Save thousands of dollars

The most obvious reason to travel during off-peak to the Maldives is of course saving a huge chunk of cash.

We're talking thousands of dollars, especially when it comes to spending time at one of the many all-inclusive resorts there are to choose from.

December to February is considered the busiest time of the year in the Maldives. As such, flights and accommodation prices are at their most expensive.

We stayed at Club Med Kani during the month of May and when comparing prices (for an all-inclusive stay that features food, drinks, activities and entertainment) to the peak travel month of December the savings come in at close to 50 per cent.

Plus if you book far enough in advance you can take advantage of early bird offers and save even more!

Still great weather

In the Maldives, the wet season is associated with the South West monsoon that usually begins between April and May and lasts until October or November.

During the wet season you might see stormy conditions, which sometimes last for several days, but there are still plenty of dry and sunny periods.

The thing to remember here is: you're still on a tropical island! So it's hot.

And whether it stays a little overcast during the day, or a storm sweeps through – we experienced both – the weather is anything but miserable.

There is one thing to note, while we were there in May it got progressively windier. It made one side of the island a little less pleasant to relax on, but the experienced staff were quick to adjust table settings, and show or party locations so guest still had the best possible experience.

October is the Maldives' wettest month, with high humidity and possible whole days of rain.

Less busy

When you can't decide which lounge chair you want by the pool, you know you've nailed the timing.

And we're not talking about the fact that you got up at the crack of dawn before the breakfast buffet to secure the required seating before the rest of the masses arrive.

Sometimes you just want to be able to enjoy a holiday without constantly standing in line, and racing people for the best seats at the bar for sunset.

Not only were we able to enjoy an exhilarating Jet Ski tour without any other participants, by the end of our holiday we even had 'our table' at lunch and dinner time.
