Tourists who take photos at this Thailand beach could face death penalty

If you're planning a trip to Thailand anytime soon with the intention of creating some fire Instagram content, listen up – it might just save your life.

Phuket International Airport is cracking down on tourist activity at Mai Khao Beach, dubbed "Unseen Phuket" in recent years. The beach has served as a unique backdrop for tourist selfies all because of its low-flying planes, which can be spotted frequently in the area.

Snapping a picture with the aircrafts has become a bucket list item for many, but airport officials suggest this type of photography can be extremely hazardous. They're so serious, that people caught taking photos inside the airport's newly-built safety zone near Mai Khao beach could face the death penalty.

"People and tourists will not be allowed to enter this area to take photos," Wichit Kaeothaithiam, Deputy Chief at Phuket airport told the Bangkok Post. "Authorities must apply strict safety rules as required by the International Civil Aviation Organisation."

Mr Wichit's warning comes following reports that the activity on Mai Khao beach has caused distractions to pilots. Those found taking photos inside the safety zone are in violation of Thai law, and are subject to punishments under the Air Navigation Act.

"The maximum penalty is the death sentence," said Mr Wichit.

Less severe punishments include a fine of up to $1,765 (40,000 baht) or a jail sentence of up to 20 years, according to The Sun.
