Amy Nelmes Bissett

Rewind to 1963 and the word on the streets of Madrid were that a "crazy man" was attempting to a build a cathedral by himself and by hand.

In 2016, Justo Martinez has finally unveiled 53-years of his hard work, which he claims he hasn't yet finished and is unlikely to before he dies. Who is crazy now?

His towering cathedral can be found on the outskirts of Madrid, an intricate working of stunning spires and detailed ceilings.

Justo, who is in his 90s, built the 40 metre structure almost entirely from local materials he salvaged, only with a few additional touches. The bricks alone came from a demolished factory.

He claims his faith was the driving force behind his lifetime work and that he has no formal training in construction or architecture.

In fact, he never even etched a drawing of his design before he started, instead opting to just work from the image he had in his mind.
