Record snowfall makes a case for visiting Reykjavik during winter

Residents of Reykjavik woke up to record snowfall on Sunday morning, with the Icelandic capital blanketed in 51cm of crisp, white snow.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, it's the heaviest snowfall the city has received since January 18, 1937, and set a new record for cumulative snowfall in the month of February.

Local media report that transportation, both public and private, was brought to a standstill and local church services cancelled out of fear no-one would be able to make it.

But they did have time to get out and enjoy it, with a number of locals and visitors to the area sharing fairytale snaps of the city on social media.
