Holidays are about accumulating happy memories – not holiday debt – so here at 9Honey Travel we created the '$100 helpline' for Aussie holidaymakers who know good value when they see it, and want to get the most out of a destination. Our mission: to find you the best travel experiences of a particular region for under $100.

One of Europe's most notoriously expensive cities, the pretty Danish capital of Copenhagen will certainly burn a hole in your pocket if you let it.

Unlike other European cities, the museums and galleries here will charge you entry, and while the food and drink scene in this effortlessly cool capital is totally booming, the cost of a meal out is on the rise, too.

But fear not. Some of the best sights and delights in Copenhagen are either totally free or will cost you way less than $100. Here's three things to do in the home city of Hans Christian Andersen that won't turn your fairytale trip into a costly nightmare.

Take to two wheels to see the sights

Many of Copenhagen's most famous sights and picturesque areas are totally free to visit. Iconic Nyhavn harbour, the Little Mermaid statue and the colourful neighbourhood of Nørrebro can all be seen by taking to the streets either by foot or by bike.

Thanks to Copenhagen's world famous biking culture and specially designed cycling routes, you'll see more bikes than cars in the city, so if you take to two wheels you'll be in good company. Named the 'Best city for cyclists' in 2017, there's never been a better city to explore by bike.

Rented at an affordable hourly rate, the Copenhagen city bikes, or Bycyklen, can be picked up or dropped off from over 100 different 'stations' and bicycle park spots all over the city, offering you the ultimate flexibility when planning your day.

The best bit? These are no ordinary bikes. The electric bikes have built in GPS — so you'll easily be able to find your way around between each destination you want to visit.

See a different side of the city

Experience another side to Copenhagen by crossing the bridge at Nyhavn and exploring the area of small islands known as Christianshavn. With canals crisscrossing the narrow lanes and intriguing walkways, colourful houseboats sporting cutting-edge design lining up along the water's edge and an infamous hip café culture, there's plenty to see.

While you're over on this side of Copenhagen, make sure you visit the famous Copenhagen Street Food market which has moved from Paper Island (PapirØen) to Refshaleøen. A former derelict warehouse, the old building has been transformed into a buzzing and lively hot spot that plays host to over 60 different street food stalls and bars.

Grab a local beer and Danish Smørrebrød and enjoy people watching down by the water or whilst soaking up the unique vibe of the area at a picnic table inside.

Price: Dishes can range in price anywhere from $5 to $25.

Enjoy a city tour with a puzzling twist

Experience a city tour unlike any you have ever done before by booking to take part in a 'puzzle walk' in the famous meat-packing district Kødbyen.

Lasting for up to two hours, this quirky alternative to a classic walking tour sees participants immerse themselves in the edgy Vesterbro area by following clues and solving puzzels. Self-guided but with the aid of a specially created notebook and map, this alternative tour allows visitors to explore the Kødbyen district in a completely unique way.
