Greenland is spoiled for stunning fjords, and hauntingly beautiful alien-like ice-scapes — but what happens when these jaw-dropping glaciers or icebergs split, or snap, from rising ocean temperatures?

Just last week, the world was given a sobering reminder of the destructive potential of these melting natural wonders.

A small village in northwestern Greenland was forced to evacuate residents last Friday, as a giant iceberg crept towards the coastline.

The mammoth chunk of ice became anchored in the ocean in front of Innaarsuit, with a population of around 170, sparking fears that a tsunami could be triggered if the iceberg splits.

Village council member Susanna Eliassen told local broadcaster KNR at the time that although residents were used to big icebergs, "we haven't seen such a big one before."
