'Relaxed retreat': Inside cruise ship's multi-million-dollar makeover
Updated . First published
There's something wonderfully attractive about a holiday that doesn't require annual leave, airport queues or leave you with jet lag.
Just a bag, a Harbour departure and a few days where your biggest decision is whether to choose dinner or a deck chair.
Norwegian Spirit's new four-day sailings could be just the ticket, a refined, adult-focused escape that feels more like a relaxing retreat than a traditional cruise.

The beauty of a shorter sailing is its simplicity. Four nights is long enough to unwind, but short enough to keep things effortless.
Following a multi-million-dollar makeover, Norwegian Spirit has a special sparkle. I really liked its modern design, contemporary interiors and noticeably relaxed atmosphere, which is on show the moment you step on board.
This isn't a high-energy, family-focused ship. It's intentionally adult-friendly which you can feel in the pace, the spaces and the overall on-board mood.
For me, dining is where Norwegian Spirit really shines. With 14 dining options and nine bars and lounges, you can shape each day differently.
One night you can indulge in an elegant Italian dinner at Onda by Scarpetta, the next you can enjoy a perfectly cooked steak at Cagney's - all before settling into one of the bars with your favourite cocktail overlooking the ocean.

The onboard atmosphere is relaxed and intimate. The ship's smaller size makes it easy to navigate (although in the first couple of days, you'll still turn the wrong way jumping out of the lift), and by day three you will start recognising both the crew and fellow guests.
I found the service was an absolute stand out. It's warm, genuine and consistently attentive.
Smiling faces greet you on every deck, every corner, whether you're at breakfast, by the pool or taking in a show in the theatre.

For those who prefer a bit of action, there's no shortage of options. A surprisingly competitive game of ping-pong I signed up for proved more challenging than expected with ocean swells in play.
The award-winning Mandara Spa, well-equipped gym and generous outdoor spaces offer balance to the culinary indulgences. The gym was more popular than I anticipated - proof that even on a short escape, many Aussies like to keep active.
The Staterooms are spacious and comfortable, offering a quiet retreat at the end of each day.
I highly recommend getting a balcony cabin if you can. Supplied
Sleep comes easily when you're being gently rocked by the sea and if you can get a balcony suite, I highly recommended it just to take in the beautiful ocean views… from the comfort of your bed.
Norwegian Cruise Line's new four-day itineraries include Hobart and, on select longer sailings, Kangaroo Island.
On my cruise Kangaroo Island was a standout - rugged, remote and undeniably Australian with dramatic coastlines and wildlife with heaps of character.
It's a reminder of just how vast and beautiful our own backyard is.

Norwegian Spirit's shorter sailings are promoted as "sophisticated tasters" and they are exactly that. Ideal for couples, friends or cruise newcomers as they offer all the benefits of ocean cruising without the commitment to a longer voyage.
You unpack once. Each day delivers something different. And you return home actually refreshed - not exhausted.
For Australians seeking a relaxing, close-to-home escape, these four-day cruises offer the perfect balance: effortless, indulgent and just long enough to reset.
