The best day to travel during these winter school holidays
The winter school holidays are well and truly here, and while plenty of people are already tackling the busy period with families there are still some deals to be found.
New search insights from KAYAK on the winter holiday period has revealed the cheapest day to fly, as well as the most popular destinations, for those looking for a last-minute holiday over the next few weeks.
Based on search data, Thursdays are likely the most affordable day to travel ($385 average return economy airfare), and a day when airports are typically quieter compared to Fridays.

Meanwhile, Sundays are likely the most expensive ($432 average return economy airfare), around an extra $47.
The demand is there, with searches for domestic return economy flights during the June school holidays are up about 143 per cent compared to 2019.
When it comes to international travel, it's a similar story.
Travelling on Thursdays ($1,827 on average) could save you about $96 compared to Saturdays, which is the most expensive with an average return economy airfare of $1,923.

As for where everyone is heading, the most popular domestic destination during the June school holiday is Melbourne, with the city ringing in as the top route from Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
Meanwhile, Sydney is the top destination for Melburnians to head to.
Bali remains the most popular international destination for Aussies to visit (around 97 per cent search increase since last year).
Tokyo, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City are proving to be popular as well with average airfare prices from Australia flat compared to 2022.
