Luna Park, Sydney: 1960s
Luna Park opened in 1935 and welcomes a million visitors a year.
One of their classic rides is reopening after a revamp.
The Wild Mouse ride has been making tourists and visitors scream since 1963.

Luna Park, Sydney: 1960s
Taken out of service in late 2022 for a planned restoration, the ride has been meticulously recrafted by a team of expert technicians and trades using traditional methods, supported by modern technology.
It's pictured here when it was first installed.

The unique gravity-fed coaster was designed to be semi-mobile and was a regular feature at both Sydney's Royal Easter Show and the Brisbane Ekka.
After undergoing a two-year, multi-million dollar restoration it reopens today.

Luna Park, Sydney: 1960s
One of only three of its kind in the world, the Wild Mouse comprises 400m of laminated timber track, supported by timber jack towers.
The Wild Mouse cars are designed to hold two passengers, seated one behind the other.
After a traditional chain lift to the highest point, riders experience a series of top level zig zags or 'switchbacks' featuring flat, slightly sloped 180 degree turns.
The zig zags are followed by a series of steep drops or 'bunny hops' producing abrupt negative g-forces separated by vigorous curves.

It might look simple, but the ride is very intricate.
The creation of curved sections of track is a highly detailed and specialised arrangement which requires the gluing of up to 10 individual pieces of timber in a specially formed jig, Luna Park bosses noted.

Luna Park, Sydney: 2000s
"The excitement of the ride is built by the speed generated by steep gradients combined with tight turns so that when passengers approach a corner it makes it feel like you're flying above the harbour," Luna Park Sydney CEO John Hughes says.
It's now open for thrill seekers.
Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne: 1861
Flemington Racecourse has operated continuously since 1840 but was first known as the Melbourne Racecourse.
The first race meeting at Flemington Racecourse was held on 3 March 1840, and the first Melbourne Cup, Flemington's most famous race, was run on Thursday 7 November 1861.

The first Melbourne Cup was run in front of a crowd of 4,000 people. By 1880, 100,000 people would make the journey to Flemington. These days the Carnival attracts over 300,000 people.

Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne: 1963
The late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended Flemington Racecourse for the Melbourne Cup Carinval on February 23, 1963.
She was a three-time visitor to Flemington, making a visit to Headquarters in 1954, 1963 and 1977, while she even had a Lexus Melbourne Cup runner in 1997 when Arabian Story finished sixth.
