Sleep under the sails: The Sydney Opera House could be getting five-star accommodation

The Sydney Opera House may soon become Australia's most in-demand bed and breakfast, with the iconic building's trust applying to transform rooms into temporary accommodation.   

According to a recent development proposal, six areas inside the Opera House could be utilised as bedrooms, making it possible for people to enjoy a dinner, a show and sleep.

A sample itinerary has guests arriving in the afternoon, enjoying cocktails and dinner at Bennelong, watching a show, meeting the artists backstage and then retiring to sleep in one of the fully-furnished bedrooms.

In the morning, people would use the dressing room showers and have breakfast in the boardroom.  

This VIP experience would only be available for a maximum of five guests, up to five times a year.

If the idea appeals, but already sounds inhibitively expensive, there could be another way to sleep under the sails: The Sydney Opera House Trust has also applied to host a slumber party for up to 100 people on a yearly basis.

Guests would sleep either in the Concert Hall foyers, or the Joan Sutherland Theatre foyers with sleeping cots, bedside tables and sofas to fill the large spaces.
