Australia's first alcoholic kombucha tap room and brewery to open in Byron

Craig Tansley

The first alcoholic kombucha tap room and brewery in Australia, The Bucha Shed, is about to open up in Byron Bay.

While the world's first alcoholic kombucha tap room and brewery was opened in San Diego last year, The Bucha Shed will be the first one on Earth to serve up kombucha mixed with premium spirits (as opposed to fermented kombucha).

Opening up in the former Stone & Wood Brewery in Byron Bay's uber-hip Art & Industrial Estate (three kilometres west of town), The Bucha of Byron – who make premium kombucha – recently launched the planet's first kombucha and premium spirits range, The Dirty Bucha.

Now available in BWS stores across Australia, The Dirty Bucha blends premium gin produced by Cape Byron Distillery (makers of Brookie's Gin) with The Bucha of Byron's Lemon Myrtle Kombucha range, and premium vodka with its Tropical Kombucha flavour.

There's a few surprises for those who make it to the tap room; including an experimental flavour on tap each month to taste. All the alcoholic and non-alcoholic range is available to taste.

These days Byron's Arts & Industrial Estate is the place to be seen (watch out for celebrity shoppers like Chris Hemsworth and Matt Damon).  The Bucha Shed sits between ultra-trendy labels and stores like Spell, Creature Yoga and Rowie.

The Dirty Bucha is the brainchild of three mates – Paul Tansley, Cam McFarlane and James Mackinnon — who left high-ranking corporate positions within the world's biggest alcohol brands to work on a passion project: introducing a whole new kind of alcohol to the Australian market.

The Bucha Shed will be open Fridays and Saturdays, and is available to hire for events and private functions. The Dirty Bucha is available at BWS stores across Australia, while The Bucha of Byron is available at 7-Elevens across Australia.
